The Body Mind Method (BMM) is one of the most widely practiced forms of the Zhineng Qigong system. It is intended for individuals who have built a solid foundation of health through the practice of Lift Qi Up Pour Qi Down. Once a strong connection to primordial qi is awakened and stabilized, practitioners can begin learning the BMM.
The BMM is a robust practice that requires engaging the mind to unite with the body. The form consists of 10 movements (to address the 10 sections of the body) in addition to an opening and closing sequence. Some of the movements are considered strenuous as they include a variety of stretching, pulling, holding, rotating and bending.
There is often a juxtaposition of tension and relaxation within each movement. The body is tense while the mind is observant and relaxed. Or, parts of the body will be tense while the rest of the body, not involved in the movement, is deeply relaxed. All this takes place while keeping the mind calm and focused inwardly to unify body and mind. The mind pays attention to all sensations.
Because the BMM uses precise movements to awaken qi within the body, the accuracy of movements is more critical than in other forms. The mind is cognizant of each movement while connecting with the entire body. This includes energy gates, dantians and channels.
The strong focus of the mind helps to center the body to perform the movements. Each movement mobilizes qi throughout. Qi penetrates by opening skin, muscles, tendons, joints, meridians and bones. Imbalances related to the inner flow of qi can be corrected. Regular practice will align posture, increase strength, boost vitality, heighten mental abilities and resolve many illnesses.

Practice of all 10 movements can take from about 45 minutes to 1.5 hours or more. There are several movements within the BMM that can be stand-alone practices. Some, such as numbers 1, 5 and 6, are often practiced individually or together for a specific purpose. Number 9 and 10 may be added as well. The number of repetitions for number 1 and 6 are often increased to support neck and low back. As you practice BMM, always remember, where the mind goes, qi follows.
It is highly recommended that you learn the BMM from a teacher who can demonstrate and describe the nuances of each movement. Some movements take much practice to grasp in a way that will provide meaningful benefits. A teacher will help refine the precise positions.
Completing a 100-gong of the BMM will transform and unite body and mind. You will be physically stronger. Your ability to listen to your body will greatly increase and become a natural phenomenon. You will sense primordial qi awakened deep into your body. Your mental powers will be enhanced and you will have a stronger foundation for deepening your qigong practice even more. When you go back to the practice of Lift Qi Up Pour Qi Down, which is recommended, you will have a wonderful surprise in store.
